It’s easy to focus on making sales without knowing how your business is really performing. We help clients who are bringing in revenue but aren’t sure where the money is going or how much profit they’re making. With Q4 underway, now is a great time to review your reports. Here are five things to check:
- Revenue: Compare it with previous quarters. Are sales rising, falling or flat? Which products or services bring in the most, and are you on track for your annual goals?
- Expenses: Review your Profit and Loss report for rising costs, unused subscriptions or unnecessary spending that could be hurting your bottom line.
- Profit: Revenue isn’t the same as profit. If your business earned $50,000 but spent $38,000, your net profit is $12,000. Compare profit with previous quarters.
- Cash flow: A business can be profitable and still struggle to pay bills. Check unpaid invoices, upcoming expenses, and whether you have cash set aside for taxes.
- Balance sheet: It shows your assets, liabilities and equity. Review cash balances, loans, credit card debt and money customers owe you.
Reviewing your reports doesn’t have to be complicated. Understanding these five areas helps you spot problems early, make smarter decisions and prepare for the year ahead.
